C+S: Green Club

Project 3: GREEN CLUB

Creativity & Service

Introduction:

At school, the Green Club has been born! Several of my classmates and myself have enlisted to participate in this club. We will promote recycling and a green lifestyle, encourage people to recycle in the lunchroom and make sure paper is being recycled in every classroom.

WHY IS THIS CREATIVITY?

We will try to persuade everybody in the school to live a greener life. In order to this in a catchy way, we will make use of our creativity. We will make a presentation trying to convince all the students and staff members to recycle and care more about their planet. We will also make creative awareness campaigns every once in a while.

WHY IS THIS SERVICE?

By offering our own time to help the community, we are offering the school and the planet a service. We will dedicate ourselves to promote a green lifestyle, will spend our lunch time making sure everybody is recycling, and weekly remove the paper recycling from the classrooms.

My goals:

My goals for this activity are:

  • to promote and encourage a more green attitude in the school
  • to convince students to start living a greener lifestyle and recycle
  • to make sure the school and students are recycling as much as possible

ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES

2. Undertake new challenges
I have never been a member of any type of Green Club before, and have never been in charge of making sure people recycle or promoting something, so this is a new challenge for me.

3. Planned and initiated activities
Together with my other classmates and our CAS Coordinator, we have met and planned how the club was going to work, dividing the tasks and responsibilities of each person.

4. Worked collaboratively with others
There are many other members in the club and we work in shifts to manage the lunchroom recycling. I also work with other people when promoting the club, working collaboratively with others.

5. Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
I will be in charge of the lunchroom duty on my given turn and will continuously show perseverance and commitment.

6. Engaged with issues of global importance
Global warming and other disasters nowadays are very present globally. Together we can make a difference.

7. Considered the ethical implications of their actions
When joining this club I definitely considered the ethical implications of my actions as I decided that there was nothing more morally correct than to join this club to try to make a difference in the school. Think global. Act local.

Reflections:

Friday 7th of February 2014

We have already set this club up, but we haven't really done anything more than meet and organize who does what. I am in charge of lunch duty on the week of 17th to the 21st. Before this, I will be doing the awareness and introductory presentation for the Upper School together with Konstantina and Gema. We have already planned it out and structured the presentation, and will meet tomorrow to create and practice it. This presentation will take place during the Upper School Assembly on Monday the 10th of February.

I will write some more reflections after I meet Gema and Konstantina tomorrow to prepare the presentation!

Saturday 8th of February 2014

I have just finished my meeting with Gema and Konstantina to prepare the Green Club presentation! We went to Konstantina's house and prepared a Prezi to show the upper school. While doing it, we learned lots of new facts about recycling. We spent the whole afternoon and had a good time together. Konstantina prepared snacks!
Here is the final result: http://prezi.com/tln1tlpx41wt/green-club/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy

Cookies and beverages for everybody!

We worked hard for almost 3 hours, but we had loads of fun!

Monday 10th of February 2014

Today was the upper school assembly and we presented our Green Club "prezi". I think it went well overall because everybody was paying close attention and nobody seemed extremely bored, which was great :)
Lots of people felt touched by our "polar bear cycle" and I think that, as a starter, we managed to catch some people's attention on the importance of recycling. We even have a new member from 10th grade, Mario, that joined the club after being moved by the presentation and is willing to participate in the lunchroom duties.
As to the teachers, Mr Trini said he really liked our presentation, and Monica was thrilled about being replaced in the trashcans ;)
On top of this, we started our lunchroom duties as "recyclers" today. Juan and Luis were supervising the trashcans to make sure everybody recycled. Overall, the start of the Green Club is going great!

RECYCLING SUPERVISOR!
Friday 21st of February 2014
My first week as a "recycling supervisor" has come to an end. During the whole week I have been standing next to the garbage cans with Idoia during lunch time supervising that everybody is recycling. By doing this, I am trying to achieve my third goal: "to make sure the school and students are recycling as much as possible". In order to fulfill my responsibility as a supervisor, I have eaten faster this week to be able to go to the trashcans before people started bringing their trays. However, it still has been a good experience, as I felt happy about contributing to the planet in my own way and helping others to do so to.
Here are some photos of the week.

Thursday 27th of March 2014

Today I met with Gema to talk about our presentation for the Lower School kids. We are going to be presenting to the LS students in two separate assemblies. One is on Tuesday the 1st of April and the other one is on the 2nd of April. Both are from 2:45 to 3:00, so that will give us the perfect time to make our presentation. Konstantina was not able to come to our meeting, but we had talked with her before on what we were planning to do and she agreed with us. We modified the Prezi that we presented to the Upper School to make it more age-appropriate and added some features that could be more applicable for smaller children. The link of the renewed Prezi is below

We also added a catchy song on "Going Green" that I personally love and think that everybody will enjoy. The link is below:

We then prepared some notecards to know who will be presenting what part. Overall I think that our meeting was very productive and hope that our presentation will be successful.

Friday 28th of March 2014

This weekend I will participate in a tree-planting activity with all of my classmates and feel very excited about it! Most of us will be going to Gernika on Sunday the 30th to participate in an environmental awareness activity that consists of planting trees. That will occur on Sunday, however, I got to plant my own tree today! My father brought me a tiny tree the other day (they were giving them away in the street) and I have been practicing for Sunday. I thought it was the perfect activity to mention in my Green Club reflections. Here are some pictures of my newborn tree. I will post new photos if it keeps growing successfully!

This is what my father brought me, I liked the logo: "Planta un árbol, planta vida"

I had everything I needed to plant my very own tree!

Next step was watering...

And my practice session for Sunday was done!

Sunday 30th of March 2014
Today we went tree planting to Gernika! Myself, my classmates, teachers, even the director; we all set off to our tree planting experience. I had to wake up at 7:30 as I had to be in Bidezabal by 8:45 (too early for a Sunday, no doubt). We went on our way on the bus and arrived in Gernika where we met with the people of  Lurgaia, the organization that had planned this activity. Lurgaia is a not-for-profit organization that works on several environmental projects. One of them is the Quercus program, which is all about the restoration and conservation of native forests.

We also worked with other voluntaries that were also participating in the activity. I worked in a group with Marta, Konstantina, Lindsey and Irene. Together, we planted 25 trees! The job was tiring but very gratifying. It also was a great way to exercise, as we had to dig several holes, which was not as easy as it looked. I particularly enjoyed this activity as one of the things that I wanted to do during my lifetime was plant a tree, and I planted more that one which made me feel great! We spent about 2 hours and a half planting the trees and then had some lunch before going back home in the bus. Working with other people (not only my classmates) on a common goal was a wonderful experience, as you could see how people come together when they have such an important goal to achieve, as restoring native forests is.

Wednesday 2nd of April 2014
Today we did one of our presentations to the Lower School about the Green Club. The audience were the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders, and I think that they enjoyed the presentation. I was moved to see that some of the kids were getting emotional about our video on polar bears and how pollution damages their natural habitat. All of the kids were paying attention to the presentation and they seemed to comprehend it well. I was quite happy to see them engaged in the presentation, as we had worked hard to prepare it. The final song made lots of them smile and I think that they were enjoying themselves while learning, so it was an absolute success!
Yesterday we were supposed to present to the smaller kids in lower school, but we had some inconveniences. We didn't have a projector or laptop available, so Konstantina and Gema managed to improvise a little presentation asking the little ones what they knew about recycling and we will be going back next Tuesday to present our original presentation. I hope that our presentation will be as successful as today's was!

Here are some images of the presentation.

RECYCLING SUPERVISOR!
Friday 4th of April 2014
Today has been my final day of the week as recycling supervisor of the Green Club. During the past week I have been supervising the trashcans during lunch, together with Idoia, to make sure that everybody was recyling. This week has not been the best week for me as I have been feeling very stressed about schoolwork and extra work, and I really didn't feel like gulping my food down just to go stand beside a traschcan. However, I did say in my learning outcomes that this would be a new challenge, so here lays the challenge of it.
Even if I didn't feel like standing there, it always feels good to know that you are contributing to a good cause, so overall it wasn't that bad.

Tuesday 8th of April 2014
Today we presented our second and final presentation to the Lower School kids. This time they were the smallest students, from kinder to second grade. We didn't use the exact same presentation as we did for the other lower school students. We decided to remove the video on polar bears as it had writing (which many of them wouldn't be able to read) and seemed a little to harsh for such small kids. Instead, we emphasized the ways you can help the world and gave examples that they could easily apply like turing the tap off while brushing your teeth, or taking reusable bags with you when you go shopping. It is a pleasure to present to the smallest kids, as they are very enthusiastic and collaborate with you, making the presentation much more interactive! They loved our "Going Green" song and many of them sang along. What impressed me the most, and made me very happy, was to hear from one of the little kid's older sister that her sister had told her to use less "albal" as using excessive packaging would kill the polar bears. This proves that we did influence their way of thinking and made them think about little changes they can make to contribute to the world's wellbeing. Great!

Sunday 20th of April 2014
Update on my mini-tree growth! I can't actually go and take a look to the trees that I planted in Gernika, however, I can take a look at my own little tree which I planted in my balcony. Not even a month has passed, and it so big compared to when I planted it. I am looking forward to keep seeing how it evolves and feel very proud about my little contribution to the planet.

RECYCLING SUPERVISOR!
Friday 16th of May 2014
Today has been the last day of my turn in the recycling supervisor timetable. I have been supervising the trashcans with Idoia as usual. The last time I reflected on my experience being the Green Club supervisor, I said that it hadn't been a good experience for me as I had been stressed out with schoolwork and wanted to have no responsiblities during my lunck break. However, this week it has been better. Even though I am still stressed out with the upcoming finals I haven't found this week's supervising session so stressful. As always, I am proud to be there contributing to the planet and to the school's green attitude. I also enjoy myself interacting with some younger students with who I don't normally interact, so that is definitely a plus!

RECYCLING SUPERVISOR!
Wednesday 23rd of June 2014
It is alread the last day of school! This "week" (from Monday to Wednesday), it has been my turn once again to supervise the recycling cans in the lunchroom. As it is the last week of school I was happy to supervise the trashcans, and had no problem carrying out my tasks. Over the past year, I have definitely seen an improvement in the student's attitude towards recycling as they now always remember to recycle, and they have made it part of their routine. Seeing this happen makes me feel very satisfied and proud of the Green Club's work as I can see that it has had an effect on the school's students. When I see that people now recycle routinely, it gives me hope as I see that it is possible to make small changes to help the planet and insert them into your lifestyle with no problems. Seeing how we have progressed during this past year makes me think that it is possible for change to make its way, and that a better future is ahead of us if we keep working for it.

I will obviously keep my green attitude during the summer.

Am I progressing appropriately?
As this is a two-year long activity, I cannot ask myself whether I have achieved my goals or not, but I can ask myself whether I am on the road to achieving them or not.

My goals for this activity were:

  • to promote and encourage a more green attitude in the school
  • to convince students to start living a greener lifestyle and recycle
  • to make sure the school and students are recycling as much as possible

My progress up to now includes:
  • We have of course improved the green attitude in the school. With this year's work, we now recycle in every classroom and in the lunchroom. However, we still have got next year to further increase this green attitude, as we will be trying to become an "Ecoschool".
  • By giving presentations to the upper and lower school students, we have raised awareness of the importance of living a greener lifestyle and of recycling. The creative part of this activity (preparing the presentations to make them interactive and appealing to the audience) was the most enjoyable for me as I was able to use my creativity, together with my friends, to create a presentation that would create and effect on the students.
  • By being a recycling supervisor, I have definitely been working on my last goal: to make sure that the school and students are recycling as much as possible, I will also carry on working on this goal next year!

RECYCLING SUPERVISOR!
Friday 5th of December 2014
The Green Club is back and better than ever. This year we have tons of new 11th grade members, which has caused for my first turn as recycling supervisor to arrive in December! Even though I like to do my job in the Green Club, I'm not complaining about doing it less often as we have been very stressed in school and lunch time is about the only time in the day when my head is not going crazy and I can get to get some time to disconnect (for half an hour at least) before diving right back into the school work.

During this week I have done my duty with the lovely Corina or by myself some days, as Idoia used to be my partner and she is no longer in school. We are not an even number anymore, so I am now left by myself. However, I was lucky enough to be joined by Corina on most days as she was kind enough to come with me.

On my return to my Green Club role I have noticed that EVERYBODY is now fully aware of the recycling process. With time, people have gotten used to recycle and no longer have to think about; they just do it naturally. Watching this is extremely satisfying as the whole objective of the Green Club was to make people take care of the planet naturally, not as an extra thing to do, but a normal thing to do. In addition, the paper recycling around the school is also a great success and is a great reminder to see the success of our club. Not to mention, we have also created an even greater impact on the school's mentality, as the 11th graders have created their very own Water Club. They focus on using water, appreciating it and avoiding its waste. They will soon be preaparing some awareness campaigns related to their Club, but their initial progress has shown me that we are achieving some of my goals, such as "to promote and encourage a more green attitude in the school", which is a great feeling.

I'll update you soon! Go Green Club!

END OF ACTIVITY

Even though the Green Club continues progressing in the ASB, my CAS program is coming to an end and with it comes my final reflection. I think that this activity has really served for me to get into the CAS spirit of planning and initiating activities, as it was one of the first activities that took initiative in. I created a presentation for both the smallest kids and all the upper school students together with two of my friends, achieving simultaneously experience working collaboratively with others and working on issues of global importance by persuading others to collaborate towards a greener and better planet. In addition, I also thought about the ethical implications of my actions and showed perseverance and commitment in my activity by spending time as the recycling supervisor during this last year and a half. Overall, I am very happy with the final outcome of this activity.
