C+S: Movie Night

PROJECT 4: "Movie Nights"

Creativity & Service

About “Movie Nights”

In the past, we enjoyed staying in the school after classes had finished on a Friday afternoon. We were usually supervised by some 11th graders and were entertained with a movie, games and food. Our parents also enjoyed their valuable free time on a Friday afternoon. Because of this, we, the current 11th graders, are trying to bring the Movie Night back.

Kids from the lower school will be able to stay on certain Friday afternoons to enjoy a Movie Night! We will prepare food for them, a movie and some fun games. Hopefully, this will create as good memories as the Movie Nights we went to created for us.

ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES

2. Undertake new challenges
Taking part in this Movie Night is a new challenge for many reasons. Firstly, I have never organized an event for smaller children. Secondly, we are responsible for their well-being. Finally, the expectations are very high, as previous Movie Nights have been very successful, so it is a challenge to keep up to the expectations and make all the “clients” happy.

3. Planned and initiated activities
To carry out the Movie Night, we have assigned a coordinator for the activity (Hanna), and have divided the participants into different committees to organize everything that is necessary; we have therefore planned and initiated activities.

4. Worked collaboratively with others
This activity requires working with others in order for it to be a success. Firstly, we have to work with the parents as they have to receive a permission slip and be informed about the plan for the Movie Night. We also have to work with each other, because without coordination, the afternoon will not be a success. Last but not least, we have to work collaboratively with the children, as we need to listen to their needs and try to make them all happy.

5. Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
Making this Movie Night a success means that we have to show perseverance and commitment in the activity. We will plan the night ahead of time, organize what need to be done and, if it is a success, show commitment to repeat the process once a month.

7. Considered the ethical implications of their actions
As the activity consists on working with children, we have to consider the ethical implications of our actions. We must make sure that everything we do is age-appropriate and will not offend or make any kid feel uncomfortable (the movie shown, games…). As we are also serving food, we have to make sure that all kids can eat the food, and need to make sure to take into account each person’s taste and possible allergies.

Why is this creativity?

In order to organize a fun and successful “Movie Night”, it is necessary to think like a kid and think about what they would like to do. In the planning process, we all used our imagination to plan some fun games that we used to enjoy as kids and think about food that would seem attractive to the kids while being healthy. It was definitely a creative process!

Why is this service?

Even though we are charging money to the kids that attend the “Movie Night”, the money is not for profit and will be used to fund other CAS-related projects. This being said, the “Movie Night” is considered service for two reasons. Firstly, it is a service to the kids that attend as we try to make them have a good time with their friends and with the activities we’ve planned. Secondly, it is a service to their parents who, by leaving their kids with us, have free time during their Friday afternoon to do whatever they want!

Our first “Movie Night”

The first “Movie Night” we organized was celebrated on Friday 7th of March from 3:30 to 7:00 PM, and about 35 children attended. We divided the kids into teams and had them play several games, some outdoors and some indoors. In between the games we had some “meriendas” ready for them, which consisted of sandwiches, potato chips, fruit juices and dessert. Once they had finished their games, it was time for the movie! We watched “Despicable Me”, and had popcorn for everyone. Overall, I think everybody enjoyed him/herself during our first “Movie Night” to come.

Below are images of the kids enjoying several games and their "merienda".

Did I meet my goals?

My goals for this “Movie Night” were…

to gather money to fund several CAS projects (as the Organic Farm)
to carry out the afternoon without any incidents or problems
to make sure that all the kids that have attended the Movie Night are having a good time
to make the kid’s parents happy and willing to bring their kids to the next Movie Night

…and I think that I did accomplish them!

We raised about 300 euros (after subtracting expenses), which as a start is quite good, as we had only announced the event during the previous week. There were no incidents during the afternoon, and every kid was enjoying him/herself. Whenever a kid had any type of issue (they didn’t like their team, they preferred another type of food…) they felt confident enough to talk to us and we managed to solve every problem. When the kids’ parents came to pick their children up, they felt quite happy to see that their kid had enjoyed him/herself, and several parents congratulated us on the great job we had done! However, we will have to wait for the next “Movie Night” to see if they are willing to bring their kids back. Updates and more reflections will be made once we celebrate our second “Movie Night”!
