A: Easter Holidays Activities

Action
Project 3: Easter Holidays Activities

Introduction

During the first week of the Easter Holidays I don’t have aerobics class. However, Gobela, the sports-center where I do aerobics offers other open classes for its customers. I will not miss this opportunity and will try to participate in as many activities as I can! Like this, I will still be in perfect shape when I return to my usual aerobic classes!

My goals

My goals for this activity are to:

  • try new challenging activities
  • work out during my aerobic break
  • keep a balanced life joining sports, relax during the holidays and homework

ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth.
By trying new activities I will be able to see whether I am good at these new activities, if I like them and decide if it would be beneficial to keep practicing them or how I can improve for the next time.

2. Undertake new challenges
I will be trying activities which I have never tried before, definitely a new challenge!

4. Worked collaboratively with others
To carry out my activities successfully, I will have to work collaboratively with my teacher and follow his/her advice and instructions. I might also have to work collaboratively with  my classmates during some of the classes.

5. Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
All the activities will take place during three consecutive days. Even if I am feeling tired on the second day or sore from the first activity, I will show perseverance and commitment by attending as many activities as I can.

8. Developed new skills

By trying new activities, I might use some skills that I have already developed in other activities, or might develop new skills as I do new exercises.

Reflections

In the picture below, you can see the different activities that Gobela offered marked in blue. The ones I attended are marked in red.
I decided to choose pilates, zumba and ciclo indoor (which is spinning) as they were the ones that I liked best. I didn't choose global fitness because I had already tried it before and it was very similar to aerobics.

Monday 14th of April 2014: PILATES
Today I woke up veeeeeeery able (taking into account I'm on holidays) in order to go to my pilates class at 9:30 AM with enough time to digest my breakfast. Even though you might think pilates is a calm class that old ladies are able to do, reality is far from it. People who practise pilates regularly have very fit bodies and are very strong. Also, pilates emphasizes breathing and its importance a lot, which I found very useful to use in my daily life. I enjoyed the class, but found some of the exercises very hard to do even if they looked easy when you saw the teacher doing them. I definitely did a very good workout and my sore muscles are definitely feeling it... On the first day I am already achieving my goals! I tried a new activity which was challenging for me as I wasn't used to do some of the exercises, I clearly worked out with a different activity from aerobics, and I learnt new skills that in my opinion will allow me to keep a more balanced life. I learnt how to connect breathing and posture and how to keep a better posture in my daily life activities.

Tuesday 15th of April 2014: ZUMBA
Today I tried my second new activity: Zumba! I have always loved this activity and have wished to take a real zumba class. I really enjoyed the class as it resembles dance, aerobics and requires coordination. The music was also great as it is very cheerful and is great to motivate to do sport. I really enjoyed the activity, but this doesn't mean that it was challenging. After the class I was covered in sweat and felt veeeeery tired. When I went out with my friends that same afternoon, I was almost going to fall asleep. Definitely a great workout! It also was a very balanced activity (one of my goals) as it was good exercise and loads of fun at the same time, helping me to disconnect.

Wednesday 16th of April 2014: CICLO INDOOR/SPINNING
Today was my last Easter Holiday activity, spinning. I have been looking forward to going to this class for a long time. At the beginning of the year I wanted to sign up for spinning, but Gobela won't allow it as you have to be over 17 years old to sign up. I didn't agree with the rule, talked with the person in charge about it and wrote complaints, but it was useless. However, during this week I was free to attend this class which was great! The spinning class was very demanding, but still fun. It was extremely tiring, but the loud and lively music encouraged you to keep going. On top this, the teacher was great and I think that she taught the class very well. Apart from the workout being tiring in itself, it was already the third day in action. This meant that I was already sore all around and felt pretty tired. However, I managed to get through the class and really liked it. Overall, I clearly think that I have achieved all my goals and have really enjoyed this activity!
