PROJECT 4: Ekorropa
Introduction
Ekorropa is an organization lead by Caritas, that recycles and sells clothes for those that cannot afford to buy clothes at normal clothes shops or are tight on money. It is similar to a thrift shop where anybody can buy the clothes that are not being used by others and have been recycled, but those in need can get tickets from the government to get the clothes for free at the store.
I will be working at the store voluntarily like any other employee.
I will go to Ekorropa every Friday (at least all Fridays that I am able to) during what is left of this trimester and during the second trimester (which finishes on the 6th of February). I will go up to the second trimester and not the third as I don’t think that I will be capable of doing many CAS activities as I will have to be studying for my final exams.
This will be a total of three months.
My goals
My goals for this activity are:
-
to help others that are in need by giving up my time to work at the store
-
to appreciate my own lifestyle by learning about others that are not as fortunate
-
to learn about other groups of people in my community
ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth.
By working in a new environment, such as this thrift shop, I might learn new things about myself as a grow, increasing my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth.
4. Worked collaboratively with others
By working in a store where many other people volunteer and plenty of customers attend daily, I will have to work collaboratively with others in order to succeed and meet my goals.
5. Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
I will attend Ekorropa every Friday for three months, showing perseverance and commitment in my activities.
6. Engaged with issues of global importance
Working hand in hand with those that are in need and with an organization that caters for those needs with the help of volunteers, is related to an issue of global importance such as poverty and how to deal with it.
7. Considered the ethical implications of their actions
I will have to learn about the shops customers, their lives and their culture with utter respect and never judging them by their appearance. Working with people in need that are in a lower class than myself, I will have to consider the ethical implications of my actions to avoid offending anybody.
8. Developed new skills
You never know before starting whether you will develop new skill or not. I might learn how to treat people, learn about the importance of customer service, develop skills as a clothes shop employee…
Reflections
Friday 7th of November
Today was the first day that I went to Ekorropa. Well, not the first day in my life, but the first day this year. Two summers ago I went to Ekorropa during the month of July to get a taste of it before starting my IB program, where I knew I would have to do CAS. That was my first contact with this service activity, which I retook today.
I went there at 18:00 and left at 20:00, right before the shop closes. I chose to go at that hour as it would give me enough time to come from school, eat something and rest for a while. I got there and as I already knew the shop manager from two summers ago I almost started working immediately. Firstly I got a brief shop tour and was told about the day to day routine at the shop. During that day my job was to organize the racks by color and bring some more clothes out from the closets. While I did this I observed what was going on around me and learnt quite a lot...
I saw that even though there was a little bit of everything in the shop, there was a vast majority of gypsies. In my day-to-day routine I go from home to school, from school to home, and out to exercise or do any errands. However, most of the time I am surrounded by people that have a similar lifestyle to my own and therefore I sometimes forget that there are other people that are not as fortunate as I am.
I obviously know that I am part of a small group of very fortunate people as I can go to a good school, go to as many after school activities as I see necessary, I can get tutoring classes if a I need them, I have enough to eat, I get presents on the holidays... Overall, I have everything I need and I know that a lot of people don't.
This doesn't mean that I am constantly reminded of these unluckier people, so I don't have them in mind most of the time. Going to Ekorropa, only today, has made me see all this people that normally don't have a face in my life, and has reminded me that there are lots of people that struggle and are in need.
I suppose that as I keep coming to Ekorropa I will get to know this people better, and that every time I return I will be grateful for what I have and willing to give back to society by coming to Ekorropa these 2 hours per week.
I found this quote that I really think reflects the experience that I have lived today.
Friday 14th of November
Today was my second day in Ekorropa and, even though nobody likes to accept it, I already felt lazy and didn't want to go. I had come back from school exhausted on a Friday. My agenda was full to the brim and I felt quite overwhelmed when I thought about the weekend that was ahead of me. Of course, I just ate an extra yummy treat and head walking to Ekorropa. I was showing commitment to my activity!
When I got there it wasn't that bad, it never is in the end, is it? The time didn't fly but it didn't go by too slowly either. My task for the day was to organize the closet where all the clothes that are not on sale are saved, which was quite fun. It was similar to nosing around a friends closet while you help her tidy it. There were lots of extravagant clothes, some of which I loved and some I hated. I didn't really get to interact with people today so it wasn't such a learning experience as last Friday. However, I realized the importance of donating clothes that you no longer use as it will end up in good hands and it is serving no purpose by accumulating dust in your closet. The containers where you can do so are everywhere!
Apart from the tasks I carried out today, I also got some Ekorropa-related paperwork done and I even got an Ekorropa card!
Friday 21st of November 2014
Today was my third day in Ekorropa and it went pretty well. Today was an extra busy day in the shop and so I got to interact with everybody much more. I started off by being in charge of the dressing rooms. I had to open them up every time someone had finished using them, pick up the clothes they didn't want, the hangers and all that stuff, and then welcome the next customer. I did that for the whole two hours I spend there and was quite busy rehanging all the clothes, putting them back in their places and coming back to the dressing rooms. Today I was very tired as we had had a work day in school and I was absolutely exhausted. However, I made an effort to offer every customer my best smile as I know that they have bigger problems than I do, and after all I'm there to try to help.
Overall the afternoon went by fine and I got what I had to get done and then relaxed home feeling much better about myself.
Friday 28th of November
Today I wasn't able to go to Ekorropa as I had a doctor's appointment. However, when I talked to the manager about it she said it was all fine as it was towards the end of the month and people wait to get their pay towards the beginning of the month before going clothes shopping. Also, next Friday will already be December which means... starting to prepare for the holiday season at the store! I'll update you soon!
Friday 5th of December
It's already December and you can tell at the store! When I went today it was pouring rain, which didn't make getting out of my house very attractive... but there's no school on Monday which made me so happy that I didn't really care if I had to go to Ekorropa; positive attitude!
As soon as I got there, they told me that we were going to start reorganizing the store for the Christmas season. During the whole time I spent there I was organizing the new juicy arrivals in the back of the store, and during the coming weeks we are going to start decorating to prepare for customers that are starting their Christmas shopping!
Even though I wasn't really in contact with the people at the store today, the reminder of the upcoming holidays had me thinking.
When it comes to the holiday season, I normally start to prepare my gift list where I write everything that I want. I'm also able to wander around the shops to look for present for my family and friends. Normally, I don't stop to think about all the people that aren't lucky enough to do that. Something as simple as going Christmas shopping, something you'd think everybody does, many people are unable to do. Because of this, today I was extra happy and proud to be at Ekorropa to give those that normally can't enjoy these activities, an opportunity to do some Christmas shopping. By decorating the store and adding details such as Christmas treats in the paying counter, you can create a new experience to those that can't afford to shop in other shops. In addition, we will soon be having winter sales, so that will definitely make the Ekorropa experience a bit more crazy. Overall, today was a great day to reflect and be thankful for everything that I have, remembering to help those that are not as lucky as you are.
Friday 12th of December
Today I went to Ekorropa and found the shop very decorated in comparison to how I left it last week... Luckily enough, they hadn't finished the decorating completely and I got to help out decorating the window display! Yay! Christmas decorating! That didn't even seem like service to the community, it felt like enjoying my Friday afternoon, I love decorating! Below are some photos of how the window display finished and my happy face :)
Friday 19th of December
Today was my last day going to Ekorropa during this year before the Christmas break. I will return when school starts again, so the break won't be too long. Today you could tell that Christmas is right around the corner as people were looking for presents, toys and something nice to wear during the holidays.
Today more than ever, I felt that I was helping people when they needed it, and I felt great for it. It was a wonderful experience just before the break. Once I have helped people during this special time of year, I can now enjoy my holidays much more. Helping others really is very satisfying. See you after the break, and merry Christmas!
Friday 9th of January 2015
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Today was my first day back to Ekorropa after the Christmas and I feel refreshed! Even though there was lots of work before the break and the Christmas rush is over now, it is now time for the sales! Today we spent most of our time removing the Christmas decorations and filling the store with sales posters. My task was to stamp all the price tags with a "SALES" stamp, indicating that they were 50% off, for now! As the time goes by, the sales reduction increases up until the clothes are almost free! Taking into account that the clothes are very cheap as they are, a discount makes them super cheap. When you see that the flow of customers increases with the sales, this means that the discount is really helpful for their cash situation. This made me realize the tight situation that all the customers are in, a price reduction of 2 euros out of a 5 euro original prices makes a difference for them, something inimaginable in our world. We use the sales to buy pretty things at a cheaper price, to buy the things we want but couldn't convince our parents to buy us at first; these people use the sales to save money for much needed clothes for their family and friends. This realization made today's experience very much worth it. See you next Friday!
Friday 16th of January 2015
During my time today in Ekorropa, I continued the sales-related activities... and craziness! As January continues, the sales get crazier and crazier as people search the best prices and stores try to get rid of their yearly leftovers. Today, as I did last Friday, I had to re-stamp the price tags, now indicating that the sales were up to 70% rather than the previous 50%. By now things are almost free, if you ask me. However, if you ask the shop's customers they probably wouldn't think the same, something that I reflected upon once more during the time I spent in Ekorropa.
If I'm honest, I didn't really feel like going to Ekorropa today. After my first real week at school (last week we started on a Thursday) and four days of exercise after school (Monday through Thursday), I was absolutely exhausted and felt like lying on the sofa for five consecutive hours. However, I showed commitment to my activity and got off of the sofa. Once I was there, I wasn't the smiliest shop attendant and didn't feel my best, but the fact that I was helping others made me feel that bit better. Not to say that the realization that being tired and loaded with work were small problems in comparison to the hardships that many of the customers go through on their day to day life, helped me have a more positive attitude. All in all, even if I wasn't the most enthusiastic about going to Ekorropa today, it still was an enriching activity to finish off the week with a grateful and refreshed attitude, putting my worries of the past week into perspective.
Friday 23rd of January 2015
Today I went to Ekorropa as I do every Friday. It wasn't such an eventful day as others are, as the sales are almost over and it is the end of the month, so people don't have as much money to spend or are waiting for their paychecks at the beginning of the month. This was something that I was commenting with one of the other girls that work at the store, and it was something that I hadn't thought about before she mentioned it. Firstly, I am still a student and don't have a salary or receive paychecks, instead I receive money from my parent or use my own money that I have received from birthday presents or so. In addition, when I am going to buy something, or when I spend money, I never think about the time of the month and whether the cash flow is at its highest (at the beginning of the month) or at its weakest (towards the end). Once again, a short time after arriving at Ekorropa, I was already feeling grateful for my current situation and happy to be helping. Event though I never think about it when I leave the house, I always come back with a different attitude. See you next Friday!
Friday 30th of January 2015
Today it was absolutely pouring during the whole day and just getting out of home after coming from school was a terrible thought... but what had to be done, had to done. I've had a very tough week (as usual and for personal reasons) and I was both mentally and physically exhausted. However, some time in Ekorropa didn't excite me but did no harm either. I'm just too tired to even reflect on my experience today, as I was practically sleep walking around the store. On a more positive note, once I got home I appreciated my sofa and my bed ten times more! It seems like I repeat myself every single week, but I do always feel better after some time spent with people that are not as lucky as I am. See you next week!
Friday 6th of February 2015
Today was supposedly my last day at Ekorropa, however I did not go as there was a snow storm and no school! I got a call from the manager and she told me that due to the weather there would probably be very few customers and only the usual workers will attend. In order to finish my activity in Ekorropa, my last Friday will be next week.
Friday 13th of February 2015
Today was officially my last day in Ekorropa. As the end of my activity has come, it is time for final reflections!
Did I meet my goals?
What learning outcomes did I achieve?
My goals for this activity were:
-
to help others that are in need by giving up my time to work at the store
-
to appreciate my own lifestyle by learning about others that are not as fortunate
-
to learn about other groups of people in my community
I think that it is safe to say that I have met all my goals for this activity as I have shown in all of my reflections above. By going 2 hours per week for a couple months, I didn't make a drastic change in my routine, what for me meant almost nothing, for others was very helpful, as many volunteers are needed for Ekorropa's system to work. Most of my reflections also show how I have achieved my second goal, as most of my reflections were related to how lucky I was and really made me appreciate my own lifestyle by learning about others who are not as fortunate as I am. Finally, I managed to learn about groups of people in my community that I am not normally in contact with, such as gypsies and plenty of foreigners and immigrants. Having to work collaboratively with such diverse people also led me to undertake new challenges. In addition, I worked with issues of global importance such as poverty and thought about the ethical implications of my actions while I worked with diverse people, making sure that I was kind to everyone and not offend by accident any of the different beliefs of Ekorropa's customer. Overall, it was a very enriching experience and I felt like it was very beneficial for me as well as for those surrounding me.
