PROJECT 2: Tutoring

Introduction

Carlota Scariolo, a 7th grade student, is struggling in some of her classes, and I will be tutoring her in order to help her. She needs some help with her writing skills in English and History, and I will help her for 45 minutes once a week to try to improve her writing. I will work collaboratively with Ms. Marcia (her teacher) to cover her needs, receive specific instructions and evaluate her progress.

I will tutor Carlota once a week, on Thursdays, from 15:30 to 16:15.
I will probably tutor her for as long as she needs during the school year.

You never know, maybe tutoring Carlota inspires me to become a teacher in the future!

My goals

My goals for this activity are:
  • to help Carlota improve her writing skills and therefore her grades
  • to assist Ms. Marcia by working collaboratively with her in the teaching process

ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES

2. Undertake new challenges
I have never taught a strict class (I have helped my classmates at the most), and doing so for the first time will definitely be a challenge for me as I try to use my knowledge in the best way to help my student.

4. Worked collaboratively with others
Apart from working with Carlota herself (the student), I will work collaboratively with Ms. Marcia to assess what area Carlota needs help in, to receive specific instructions on the work she needs to get done, evaluate her progress…

5. Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
I will teach Carlota every Thursday from 15:30 to 16:15 for as long as is necessary, showing commitment in this activity.

8. Developed new skills
You never know, maybe tutoring Carlota inspires me to become a teacher in the future! I might develop some teaching techniques, persuasive ways of making people learn… or other new skills!

Reflections

Thursday 20th of March 2014
Today was my first class with Carlota and I feel great! I had talked with Ms Marcia previously and she had already given me instructions. I had to work with Carlota on an assignment she had already turned in but wasn't great. Ms Marcia gave me a copy of her work, the instructions and the grading criteria. She also gave me what she considered a good composition (from another student) to use as a guide. With this material I prepared the class: printed a guide on structuring an essay, a list of linking words, the instructions of the composition and her own composition. When I read her work for the first time I knew there was lots of work to be done, but I knew that whenever you're starting from a low point there is lot of space for improvement. This became true once I started working with her. She had tons of great ideas and didn't have a bad range of vocabulary. However, she needed help structuring essays and with some grammar issues. Overall, for the first class I think it went great as we made lots of advances in very little time. In addition, I gave her my email address in case she wants me to correct her final work or has any questions. I really enjoyed my first class and am looking forward to the next one!

Today I received Carlota's work and made some comments on it (on google drive) with some tips and advice. Most of them were tips on grammar mistakes and some ideas to make her writing better and more interesting. Even though she didn't actually follow all of my advice, her current essay compared to what she had initially turned in is much better! I feel proud of her and of myself for improving so much in so little time. This clearly shows that Carlota has potential that can be very well used.

Monday 24th of March 2014
Ms Marcia has always been fast correcting and today she sent me and Carlota her corrected work and grade. She got a 74% which is great for a start. Ms Marcia agreed with me on the fact that she had improved greatly, and she also advised her to follow my tips the next time. Ms Marcia affirmed that "Yes, working with you will help her tremendously, I am sure.", which made me feel happy. If Carlota has already improved so much by following some simple structure instructions, I am sure that with time, she will be able to become a great writer!

This an extract of Ms Marcia's comments:
Hi girls!  This rendition is certainly much better, much better indeed.  Jone, you gave good advice about "I" being capital, careful with commas, and more description.  Next time, Carlota, make the changes that Jone suggests.

Thursday 3rd of April 2014
Today I have been teaching Carlota during the last period after school. Ms Marcia gave me an assignment for her to practice for her upcoming "Show What You Know". Out of several topic choices she chose the one she felt more comfortable with, and I recommended that she did that to in the exam. I also recommended for her to choose a topic she had loads of information about, to be able to give lots of examples in her essay. We made an outline of how to write a good essay for her exam. We developed the introduction and the conclusion fully, wrote the topic sentences of each paragraph, and wrote bullet points for the information that she would include in each paragraph. If she remembers the key concepts that I told her, and she has prepared a good index card and studied the topics that might come up, I think that she will be able to get a good grade!

Even though I think that I am progressing with Carlota during these sessions, I have been thinking about giving it up. I am feeling very stressed and overloaded with coursework and extra work and feel like there are not enough hours during the day. The last period of the day (from 3:30 to 4:15) is very valuable, and I think that with the Extended Essay, Group 4 Project and final exams coming up I cannot afford to help Carlota during this time.

Wednesday 9th of April 2014
Today I have finally decided to give up my classes with Carlota. I have talked with her mother, with her and with Ms Marcia, and have informed Alan and Mariana. I don't feel happy or proud about my decision, but I feel that my classwork comes first, and that this has been the correct decision if I take into account my priorities. As I have said previously, I have been under a lot of stress and felt like I couldn't cope with everything. Luckily, Carlota's mother, Carlota and Ms Marcia were very understanding and agreed with my decision. They also thanked me for the help I had provided, which at least was something.
