S: IBDP Parent Night

Service

IBDP Parent Night

Introduction

We, the current 11th graders, have been the first ever IB students at ASB. However, the current 10th graders will join us next year. Because of this, the school will be celebrating some conferences in which the 10th grade students and parents will be receiving information on the IB program. As unfortunately many teachers will not be here next year, it didn’t really make a lot of sense to have them present their subjects. So who would be the best choice? US!

We will be presenting all the IB subjects that you can choose from and those that are not optional to, between all the class members. We have been given the chance to choose the subject we most enjoy together with one or two classmates and must prepare a presentation in which we explain the subject requirements, assessment, what we like, what we would have liked to have done to be better prepared and other advice for the 10th graders.

I am assigned to present CAS and "The Young Entrepreneurs Club" plus the Business & Management class.

Why is this service?

This activity is a service to the ASB community. Firstly it is a service to the 10th grade parents and students that are receiving information that is very useful for them. Secondly it is a service to the teachers that are released from this obligation of attending the school after school hours.

My goals

My goals for this activity are:

  • to inform the 10th grade parents and students about my experience
  • to solve any doubts or answer any questions that they may have
  • to give them specific advice and tips that might make their entry into IB less stressful

ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth.
By giving a presentation to adults and kids my age, I will be able to measure if I have good communication skills, if I need to work on them, if I am good at giving advice or can improve in some way etc. This will increase the awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth.

2. Undertake new challenges
This will definitely be a new challenge for me as I have never given a presentation to parents of the school or other students about something I know about and they do not, and have never given a presentation without teacher supervision either.

4. Worked collaboratively with others
For this presentation, I have been assigned to present CAS and The Young Entrepreneurs of Business & Management. In order to plan for this, I will have to meet with Mariana (CAS Coordinator) and Ms Trini (B&M teacher) to talk about what and how I should present. I will then prepare a presentation and ask for their advice, working collaboratively with them.

5. Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
I will meet with my teacher, prepare a presentation, ask for their advice, change anything if it is necessary and attend the school on a Monday after school for several hours, clearly showing perseverance and commitment in this activity.

7. Considered the ethical implications of their actions
Taking into account the 10th graders’ feelings and (probable) fears about the IB is key in this presentation. When we go there to present, we must think about how they are feeling and try to bring out the positive aspects of the program and point out the negative aspects in a constructive way to avoid making them feel scared about starting the program. In order to consider the ethical implications of our  actions, we must choose the appropriate words and things to say.

8. Developed new skills
In the process of creating a presentation and presenting it to a larger audience than what I am used to, I may develop new skills (presentation skills, communication skills, audiovisual skills…)

Reflections

Before the presentation:
Tomorrow we will be presenting the IBDP Parent Night! I have been working until late to finish both my presentations, CAS and Business & Management. Right now I am pretty frustrated, as I am working on this rather than on my course work (which is a lot). I know that it is a service activity, but due to my perfectionism I am spending way to much time preparing my presentations. I have prepared index cards for both my presentations and have timed myself to see if I met the time limit. Overall, even though it is late now, and I am not very cheerful, I think that the presentations and the parent night will be successful.

My CAS Coordinator, Mariana, seemed to love my index cards!

We had time to take some pictures with the girls.

We also had some fun, and had time to take some selfies :D

After the presentation:
The parent night is over. Everybody in the class has participated and I think that both the 10th grade parents and students were happy with the presentations. I was first presenting CAS! I am extremely proud and happy with the feedback I received, as both Alan, Mariana, other teachers and parents have congratulated me on my presentation. Even though I was frustrated with the activity at first, in the end it has turned out to have a good outcome for me. I presented the Business & Management class presentation and I think that the presentation was clear and concise and all students and parents understood it pretty well. They were all very excited about the "Young Entrepreneurs Club" and the different activities we did there. When parents or students had questions we were glad to answer them, and I think we resolved many of their doubts. This means that I think I have fulfilled my goals of informing, solving doubts and giving advice to the 10th grade parents and students. Doing this, however, was not easy, as I had to repeat my Business & Management presentation many times to the different groups and by the end of the presentation felt exhausted.

I sat next to the other Group 3 subject, History, presented by Konstantina and Juan.

Gema and I, happy to have finished the presentations successfully.
