C+S: Halloween

Project 1: HALLOWEEN

Creativity & Service

Introduction:

My first project of the IB! This page is made to write, reflect and share everything about the CAS Projects. We call projects to those activities that involve more than one CAS part (Creativity, Action or Service). This very first project is the Halloween school party! It involves Creativity and Service.

Creativity

This activity is very creative because we (my classmates and I) are in charge of organizing a "Haunted House" for all of the kids and prepare the games for the little ones. This is a very creative activity because we have to use all of our imagination to come up with original and spooky ideas for the children. We have all been working as a group planning everything for such a special day!

Service

This activity also counts for service because we are working for the school, giving back for everything that it has given us. We have used our free time to organize and plan all the activities and will go to school both on the Saturday before the party and the whole Sunday of the party. We will help the PTO set up everything, will set up our own activities on Saturday and be there on Sunday. After the party ends on Sunday, we will stay longer to clean up and bring the school back to normal.

MY GOALS:

My goals for this activity are:

  • To collaborate with my classmates in organizing a successful “Haunted House”
  • To help the school community, giving back for everything it has given me
  • To have a great time and enjoy this Halloween party  but from a different position
  • To plan, organize and carry out successful games for the little ones

ANTICIPATED LEARNING OUTCOMES

2. Undertake new challenges
It is the first time that we participate in the organization of a whole-school party; and that will obviously be a real challenge.

3. Planned and initiated activities
Since the day that we were told that it was our turn to organize the Halloween “Haunted House” and some games for the little ones we have been planning everything out and meeting during our free time to organize everything.

4. Worked collaboratively with others
The organization of the “Haunted House” and all the games are being organized by all the members of the class, even those who will not be  able to come to the actual party. Therefore we must work collaboratively with each other to be able to organize everything successfully.

5. Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
I think that I am showing perseverance and commitment to this activity as I have gone to “Halloween meetings” with my classmates during our free time, will come to school the day before Halloween to prepare everything, will be working during the whole actual party, and will stay afterwards to clean up.

REFLECTIONS:

Saturday before the party:
I just came back from the Halloween preparation afternoon. We've been in school from 4:30 in the afternoon until 8:00 at night. It's been a very tough day; a very long day. Of course, I spent the morning studying, doing homework, and preparing for the Halloween activities (buying the necessary material and recollecting other material from around the house). When I arrived to school we started working immediately  We had loads of stuff to hang around the for the "Haunted House" and lots of decorations to make. Konstantina and I were more focused on preparing the games. We spent the whole afternoon in the art room making posters, games and prices for the little ones. We then prepared the classrooms where the games were going to be set. Adding to this, we helped the PTO set up the rest of the school: tables, decorations, and other things that they asked us to help with. Finally, tomorrow is the actual Halloween party, I hope that everything is alright and the kids enjoy the game and the "Haunted House".

Sunday after the party:
Today has been the Halloween party, I spent almost all day at school. It is quite a bazaar feeling, being at school both on Saturday and on Sunday. We all (my class) arrived at school in the time range of 10:00 to 12:00. We gave the final touches to the Haunted House and finished setting up all of the games. When the kids arrived at 12:30 to our games, we were all ready to go. During the games, I was in charge of the "Halloween Bingo" station; but there were five other stations with other games available for the children. We had candy, Halloween-related toys, and balloons for the children as prices. We offered games for one hour and then closed.

After the games were closed, and we had managed to take a bite, we had to prepare the "Haunted House" for the grand opening. All of the actors and actresses had to put on their costumes and make-up; but I was up front selling the tickets. We were open for two whole hours; and I think the children really enjoyed it. By the time we were closed we were all exhausted, we had been practically three hours standing up and surrounded by noisy and excited children. We had some time to rest and eat and drink something; but then we had to get back to work. As part of the service in the activity we moved all the tables back to their respective classrooms and cleaned up the main hallways and lunchroom. Of course, we also cleaned up all the mess we had created in the "Haunted House" and the games and left everything as good as new.

In conclusion it was an exciting and tiring day, like a roller-coaster ride; at times thrilling and at others a bit scary. After all, it was a Halloween party.

Some costumes were scarier than others... I was a cute pumpkin!

Did I meet my goals?

My goals for this activity WERE:

  • To collaborate with my classmates in organizing a successful “Haunted House”
We raised 316 euros only from the sale of "Haunted House" tickets. With the exception of some children who didn't manage to complete the "Haunted House" because it was too much for them; I think that all of the children enjoyed and liked the experience. Many of them wanted to repeat!
  • To help the school community, giving back for everything it has given me
I think that all of my classmates and I have definitely given back to the school. Together we set all of the tables and decorations for other students and parents to enjoy during the party and together, we stayed 2 extra hours tidying up and moving all the tables back to their classrooms after the party had finished.
  • To have a great time and enjoy this Halloween party  but from a different position This goal is definitely accomplished. We all had a great time, even though there were some moments of stress and exhaustion. I think that working together towards a common goal has united the class. Furthermore, working for the kids to enjoy themselves has made us (or at least made me) see things from a different point of view; definitely more responsible and grown up position.
  • To plan, organize and carry out successful games for the little ones  The games were also a success! Kids were laughing and trying all the games in order to win the delicious prices. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of making others happy; and all the effort and time put into it was worth it after seeing all those cheerful and thankful kids. I felt as if they looked up to us, and that made me feel very proud.

Overall I think the activity was a great success and an enjoyable event!
